EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is a cornerstone of the EU's climate policy, requiring polluters to pay for their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under a “cap and trade” principle. Complementing this, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) aims to prevent carbon leakage by setting a price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon intensive goods entering the EU and avoid the relocation of industries to higher-emitting regions encouraging cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries. This OIO will analyse the impact of EU ETS and CBAM on port competitiveness, examining some of the actual case studies of their implementation.
